He taught previously at the University of Texas at San Antonio (2007-2016). He received his BA and MA from Brandeis in Classics and English and his PhD in Classics from New York University where he also received an Advanced Certificate in Poetics and Theory. Joel has been a Fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies (2013) and has received the Society for Classical Studies’ Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Collegiate Level (2013). In the first introductory seminar we will review Jung’s concepts of the collective unconscious and levels of the psyche. We will discuss why Jungians value and study fairy tales as a pathway to working with dreams. Inspired and informed by the work of Marie Louise von Franz, Jung’s early assistant and life-long collaborator, we will work with one story per session to practice the careful translation of symbolic language in order to understand how it can be applied to everyday life. The four additional sessions will focus on survival, finding strength, and good fortune in unexpected places. Volunteers will read the story aloud, followed by discussions attending to the symbols, patterns, and developments of the narrative. After registration, the forthcoming meeting’s tale will be sent electronically to participants 2-4 days in advance.
