The dream is a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the soul…
— Carl Jung

The psyche speaks to us through both words and images. The world of words allows us to communicate both concrete thoughts and beautiful stories rich in emotion. The world of image arises from the creative source of the unconscious. Images move our hearts and souls in ways that often evade the strictly literal. Images animate us, enliven us, and provide a bridge to experiencing numinous meaning in our lives. In sleep, we enter the dreamworld where images speak to us in mysterious ways. How can we come to better understand what these images are saying to us? How are they telling us about changes we need to make in our lives? Are they pointing us to new sources of inner creativity? Are they warning about future events in our lives?

Carl Jung developed a particular method to relate to dreams and their interpretation. In 1931, he described his way of dreamwork to a group of physicians. This short essay based on his lecture provides an outline of how to view dreams in terms of unconscious psychic processes and how to creatively engage with them. Using the real dreams of his patients, Jung exhibits his approach and provides cautionary advice on the pitfalls of dreamwork. In this class, we will carefully work through the essay together discussing Jung’s approach to dreamwork and relating his methods to living a more meaningful life.
