There are a number of famous dreams and dreamers in the book of Genesis. We will explore them from different psychoanalytic perspectives including Freud, Rabbinic attitudes towards the meaning of dreams, and other psychoanalytic approaches. This course will offer some context as to the place of dreams in Jewish thought, the extensive discussion of dreams in the Talmud and the role of dreams in psychoanalysis.

Psychoanalysis and Torah are not terms that often appear in the same sentence, yet they are very similar in their methods of interpretation, inquiry and analysis. Freud identified a specific method of interpretation and inquiry to create meaning with patients in psychoanalysis. This method has many parallels with the ancient way of studying biblical text as it is a continuation of the ancient interpretive approach.

This course offers the opportunity to read four well-known classic Biblical stories about dreams in the Book of Genesis in a completely different way.  Our methods of discussion and study are influenced by contemporary psychoanalytic theories of the human experience and the ancient Midrash tradition. We will be examining words, gaps, repetitions, and inconsistencies to uncover hidden meanings, perhaps repressed meanings, in the Biblical narrative. We will thus broaden our perceptions of the multiple meanings of these timeless stories embedded in the text waiting to be revealed.

In studying classic biblical dream stories in this way, we will follow the ancient method of group study. This type of analysis is a relational engagement. According to ancient thought, “meaning” is an act of co-creation whether it be reader and text, or student and teacher. Contemporary psychoanalysis also recognizes “meaning” as co-created, between analyst and patient.  Using both the ancient and modern psychoanalytic interpretive methods, this course will reveal new meanings in the narratives that relate to our modern world and human condition.
