“My speech is imperfect. Not because I want to shine with words, but out of the impossibility of finding those words, I speak in images. With nothing else to express the words from the depths.”
Most Jungian workshops engage the psyche primarily through intellect and theory or The Thinking function. This series takes a radically different path, one grounded in Carl Jung’s own private holistic grounded vision.
When Jung fell into his mid-life confrontation with the unconscious, he didn't just write; he painted, sculpted, and conversed with the figures of his imagination. His epic personal experiment, documented in The Red Book, proved that symbols are not mere codes to be decoded by the mind, they are living images meant to be met with the whole self.
Across four immersive, 90-minute sessions, art therapist Maggi Colwell invites you to step beyond linear thought. Using Jung’s four psychological functions: Thinking, Feeling, Intuition, and Sensation. You will learn how to awaken, dialogue with, and physically process the living imagery of your own interior life.
The Journey Beyond the Intellect (Thinking)
Each session offers a richly layered descent into a different mode of encountering the interior life. Moving past rational critique, we will actively engage the unconscious through four primary modalities:
🎨 Dialoguing with the Living Image What grabs our attention in the outer world always mirrors where psychic energy is moving within our inner landscape. You will be guided through experiential exercises to activate your own creative process—either by working with images from masters that magnetically draw you in, or by creating simple art of your own in the moment. Through this active imagination process, you will learn to speak directly to these images and, more importantly, listen to how your body, emotions, and psyche respond.
👁️ Loosening Linear Thought & Boosting Intuition Cultivate and awaken raw intuition by stepping outside the boundaries of structured logic. Through spontaneous art-making exercises, targeted journaling prompts, and finding hidden connective threads between seemingly unrelated subjects, you will learn to bypass the ego's gatekeepers. We will work directly with your personal dream imagery, maps of association, and recurring emotional themes to bridge the gap between your dream life and your waking reality.
❤️ Color & Emotional Expression (The Feeling-Toned Complex) Carl Jung originally defined a psychological complex as a "feeling-toned image." In this exploration, we move away from form and engage entirely with color through abstract expression to map your immediate emotional reactions. We will decode the somatic language of emotion, utilizing a curated emotional word bank to help give names to the complex, non-verbal spaces within.
🌿 Somatic Sensing & The Unconscious Body The body holds the history that the mind tries to forget. Using physical sensation word banks, we will shift focus entirely toward internal sensing—the profound ability to track raw physical sensation (distinct from emotion) as you react to your own art-making. This session includes a deep body-awareness guided meditation, an intuitive drawing prompt, and an exploration of how posture and body language act as direct indicators of unconscious communication.
💼 Clinical Case Integration: A concluding case vignette study and a facilitated, collaborative group discussion to process, ground, and seamlessly apply these depth-psychology methods to real-world clinical practice.
An Open Invitation: Absolutely no prior art experience, artistic skill, or specialized knowledge of Jungian psychology are required. This workshop is designed to meet you exactly where you are. A simple, accessible list of suggested art materials will be provided immediately upon registration.
