The art of [active imagination] consists … in allowing our invisible partner to make herself heard…
— Carl Jung

A Collaborative Reading Exploration of Jung's Masterpiece
Experience the power of collective reading by embarking on a transformative journey into Carl Jung's groundbreaking essay, The Transcendent Function. Mind Body Passport's Reading Room series utilizes a dynamic online format to unlock the depths of Jung's work in a way you've never experienced before.

Collectively, we will analyze key passages from Jung's 1916 essay on The Transcendent Function by reading sections aloud each week, fostering a deeper connection with the material and promoting a richer understanding of Jung's theories. This interactive format fosters a vibrant learning community where everyone contributes to the exploration of Jung's ideas. With expert guidance, you will benefit from the insights of experienced facilitators to explore a diversity of interpretations, share your insights, and learn from fellow peers within a supportive environment.

Psyche speaks to us through the languages of word and image. The world of image arises from the creative source of the unconscious. Images move our hearts and soul in ways that often evade the strictly literal. Images animate us, enliven us, and provide a bridge to experiencing numinous meaning in our lives. At night we enter the dreamworld where images speak to us in mysterious ways. During daytime, fantasy images may spontaneously come to us. How can we better understand what these messages from the unconscious? What are they telling us about changes we need to make in our lives? Are they pointing us to new sources of inner creativity?

Carl Jung developed the method of active imagination to dynamically engage with the images of the unconscious. He discovered this method during his own descent into the unconscious which he recorded in The Red Book. In 1916 Jung wrote an essay The Transcendent Function describing the technique of active imagination in which one consciously engages with fantasy images arising from either dreams or daytime visions. He later revised and expanded the essay in 1958. In this class we will carefully work through the essay discussing Jung’s method of active imagination and the importance of symbol making.
